Orthodontist vs. Dentist

Specialist training brings a deeper focus to tooth movement, bite development, and jaw relationships.

Your family dentist plays an important role in maintaining your oral health, but orthodontists receive additional specialized training specifically focused on tooth movement, bite development, and the relationship between your teeth and jaws.

After completing dental school, Dr. Caruso and Dr. Micaroni each completed an additional two-year orthodontic specialty training program. They are also board-certified orthodontic specialists, having completed a rigorous board certification process demonstrating their expertise in orthodontics.

Think of it much like other areas of health care. Your primary care physician is highly qualified to manage your general medical needs, but may refer you to a cardiologist when specialized expertise is needed for a heart condition.

Similarly, your family dentist can provide many types of dental care and may offer orthodontic treatment. An orthodontic specialist, however, has completed additional training specifically focused on how teeth move, how the jaws develop, and how to create a healthy, functional, and stable bite.

Clear-aligner treatment should begin with a thoughtful evaluation and continue with professional follow-up. An in-person exam gives the clinician a chance to evaluate the teeth, bite, dental history, and any records needed to determine whether clear aligners are appropriate and how they should be monitored.

At Caruso Orthodontics, our doctors combine this specialized training and experience with advanced technology to develop individualized treatment plans for each patient.
